The journal entitled “Chowanna” is an interdisciplinary forum for exchanging ideas and presenting conclusions drawn from academic studies in the field of multifaceted update of educational and upbringing processes, and other types of social participation in the changing socio-cultural and civilizational conditions. “Chowanna” publishes texts not published before, articles in foreign languages and new translations of academic texts.

The journal was created in 1929 by the founders and employees of the Pedagogical Institute in Katowice as an academic bulletin. Its title refers to the name of a Slavic goddess taking care of children, at the same time indicating the role of monumental work by Bronisław Ferdynand Trentowski – Chowanna czyli system pedagogiki narodowej, jako umiejętności wychowania, nauki i oświaty, słowem wykształcenia naszej młodzieży so inspiring for the original vision of the journal. Trentowski's deliberations were interdisciplinary, they considered the philosophical, psychological, social, historical, pedagogical and cultural problems, and the journal follows this path.
 
Chowanna” half-yearly is entered in the list of journals obtaining points in the field of humanities and social sciences. According to the Minister's list of academic journals (part B), every author of an article published in “Chowanna” is awarded 10 points which can be included in the academic achievements. The journal has the patronage of the Committee on Pedagogical Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

COURSE AND RULES OF THE REVIEWING PROCEDURE
 
  • “Chowanna” publishes new texts, not published before; the exception to this rule can be only articles in foreign languages and new translations of academic texts.
  • The submitted texts are initially qualified by the Editorial Team. The assessment covers primarily the substance compliance with the thematic profile of the journal and the academic approach to the problem. The text can be accepted for review if it meets also the editorial requirements – for the text (download), illustrations and diagrams (download) and if the author submits the applicable statement (download). The texts to be published can be submitted by e-mail (chowanna@us.edu.pl) or by traditional post (to the Editors' address), also with an electronic version of the article attached.
  • The texts initially accepted for publication shall be assessed by two independent reviewers according to the rules of the double-blind review (review form: download). Detailed rules of the reviewing procedure are based on the Minister's guidelines (download) and the Code of Ethics of an Academic Employee, prepared by the Academic Ethics Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences, adopted by the General Meeting of PAS on December 13, 2012 (download). The editors will notify the authors that the text was approved for review in a separate message – this is also the last stage of the publishing procedure when the author can withdraw the text.
  • The Editorial Team notifies the author of the reviewers' opinion. After the author has presented his/her opinion on the review, the Team makes a decision to approve the text for publication or to reject it. 
  • If the text is approved for publication, the author is asked to send a paper copy of the statement that the text is genuine to the Editors (download). Texts other than academic articles (reviews, messages, discussions etc.) are not subject to the review procedure – their approval for publication depends on the Editorial Team. 
  • The Editors do not return any unsolicited texts. They reserve the right to abridge them and adjust (including the adjustment of subtitles and titles of texts and the titles of monographic sections) and also stress that any sings of academic inaccuracy of the authors and reviewers will be documented and reported to the competent bodies. 
  • The Editors present a comprehensive list of reviewers once a year.
